Doing Business with a Mission: The Promise and Perils of For-Profit Social Enterprise
8:00 AM - 9:30 AM

New Hampshire Institute of Politics - (Auditorium)

Social enterprise is a recent development in which organizations seek to provide welfare benefits in a businesslike manner. Although many social enterprises are traditional nonprofits, some have adopted the for-profit form in order to realize their social mission more effectively. As for-profit businesses, social enterprises must compete successfully in a crowded market with traditional nonprofits and government welfare services, in addition to standard for-profit companies. This presentation provides an economic analysis of the market opportunities for pursuing a social mission in the for-profit form and a legal analysis of the governance problems confronting for-profit social enterprises.

About the Speaker: John R. Boatright is the Raymond C. Baumhart, S.J., Professor of Business Ethics in the Quinlan School of Business at Loyola University. He has served as the Executive Director of the Society for Business Ethics, and is a past president of the Society. He was recognized by the Society in 2012 for a "Career of Outstanding Service to the Field of Business Ethics." He is the author of the books Ethics and the Conduct of Business and Ethics in Finance, and has edited Finance Ethics: Critical Issues in Theory and Practice. He serves on the editorial boards of Business Ethics Quarterly, Journal of Business Ethics, and Business and Society Review. He received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago.

The Anselmian Abbey Players Present: The Mystery of Edwin Drood
7:30 PM

Dana Center - (Koonz Theatre)

Everyone’s a suspect in The Mystery of Edwin Drood and this wildly warm-hearted musical requires the audience to finish the story that Charles Dickens didn’t! In this winner of 4 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, we meet a rollicking band of Victorian Music Hall entertainers who spin the tale of John Jasper, a Jekyll-and-Hyde choirmaster who is quite madly in love with his music student, the fair Miss Rosa Bud. Miss Bud, in turn, is engaged to Jasper’s nephew, young Edwin Drood.

Edwin disappears mysteriously one stormy Christmas Eve. Has he been murdered? And if so, then whodunit? It is here, however, that Mr. Dickens laid down his pen for good, and the actors must turn to the audience to determine the most unusual and hilarious finale.

The Mystery of Edwin Drood is that rare show that ends differently every night, depending on the audience vote! Musical numbers include The Wages of Sin, Perfect Strangers, Both Sides of the Coin, Don’t Quit While You’re Ahead and Moonfall.
